Columbus to have first-ever Leather Pride Week

Columbus's first ever Leather Pride Week is scheduled for June 29 through July 7, 1996. Various events are being planned by the local levi/leather/SM/fetish clubs and organizations. The clubs and organizations involved in Leather Pride Week include National Leather Association Columbus, Trident International Columbus, Boy Toy Productions Inc., Vulcan L/L Dragon Leather Club, Centurions, Columbus Ursine Brotherhood and the Columbus Stompers.

The week will kick off with a benefit for the Houghton Legal Defense Fund sponsored by NLA Columbus. The event will begin at 7 pm at Outland and will include a bullwhip demonstration at 9 pm, door prizes

and an auction. The Outland will also host the Leather Archives from Chicago and a vendor area. The Leather Archives and vendor area will be open on June 29 from 10 am to 3 pm and from 7 pm to closing. Columbus' Gay Pride March and Gayfest will be held on June 30. The local leather community invites anyone interested in the levi/leather/SM/fetish lifestyle to join them as they march in unity in the Gay Pride March. Look for the Leather Pride Week float. Information on the local clubs and organizations will be available at Gayfest. After the Gay Pride March and Gayfest join Boy Toy Productions at the Exile for "Once in a Blue Moon," a Leather

Pride Party starting at 10 pm.

Events for July 1 include a pizza party at Slammers at 7 pm and leather strippers at Outland at 11 pm. NLA Columbus will present SM 101 at the Stonewall Union Community Center at 6:30 on July 2. On July 3 join the Centurions for happy hour at Tradewinds from 4 pm to 9 pm before Red, White and Boom. Later that evening the Vulcans will host a happy hour at the Outland from 5 to 8 pm on July 4 then head over to Wall Street to join the Columbus Stompers from 8 to 11 pm.

The Mr. Columbus Drummer Contest is scheduled for July 5 at 9 pm at Tradewinds. Doors will open at 8 pm. The contest will be

produced by Boy Toy Productions, Inc. The winner will represent Columbus at Great Lakes Drummer in Minneapolis over the August 2 weekend. The winner will receive transportation to Great Lakes Drummer, lodging while there and entry fee to Great Lakes Drummer. Saturday, July 6 includes a bar night hosted by Trident at the Exile starting at 9 pm and a Dragon bar night at Outland starting at 10 pm. Shuttle service will be provided between the two events. Leather Pride Week will come to a close with a formal Leather Brunch at the Grapevine on Sunday, July 7 at 1 pm.

In the Life to look at new lesbian and gay films

For its Gay Pride Special, In the Life, the award-winning gay and lesbian newsmagazine on PBS, examines the rapidly expanding world gay and lesbian film and video. Whether in consciousraising documentaries and short videos, or big Hollywood features, gay-themed works have exploded onto screens from art houses to neighborhood shopping malls.

Highlighted in a special sneak preview excerpt is It's Elementary, a new documentary by Academy Award-winning director Debra Chasnoff (Deadly Deception, 1993), that shows what happens

when grade school teachers address gay issues and homophobia in the classroom. This powerful documentary is sure to controversial in light of high-profile, right-wing efforts to keep any mention of homosexuality out of schools. In the Life presents the first national look at this important new film.

Correspondents Tanya Barfield and Charles Busch join In the Life host Katherine Linton for these stories and more on the Gay Pride edition of In the Life, which will air Saturday, July 6 on Akron-Youngstown channels 45/49 at midnight.

Debra Chasnoff and Helen Cohen speak with a group of first graders in the documentary It's Elementary.
